Stavros V. Konstantinides

Dr Konstantinides’ research focuses on acute pulmonary embolism. He is a Professor of Medicine in and Vice-chairman of the department of Cell Biology, division of Cardiology and Pulmonary Medicine at the University Clinic in Göttingen, Germany. He received his medical training at Aristotle University in Thessalonica, Greece, and completed a clinical fellowship in cardiology at the University Clinic in Freiburg, Germany, where he was subsequently a professor. He also worked as both Research Associate and Visiting Professor at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA, USA.
Dr Konstantinides’ main academic interests are risk stratification and management of acute pulmonary embolism, and novel therapeutic and preventive approaches to atherosclerosis and thrombosis, particularly the association of atherosclerosis and thrombosis with the metabolic syndrome, the therapeutic potential of stem cells for atherogenesis and restenosis, and the exploitation of post-transcriptional gene modification using RNA interference in functional genomic research and as a potential therapeutic tool.
He has won numerous awards, including the International William Harvey Prize, the Premedion Prevention Prize, and the Novartis Foundation Prize. He is a member of a number of pulmonary and cardiological societies and has participated in many work groups, task forces, and councils within them. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Zeitschrift für Kardiologie and serves as reviewer for many other journals.
