Ian A. Greer
Ian Greer is Dean and Professor of Obstetric Medicine at the Hull York Medical School, York, UK. Previously he was Regius Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Deputy Dean of the Medical Faculty at the University of Glasgow, UK, where since 1991 he had been head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Prior to that, he was a clinical scientist at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Reproductive Biology Unit, Edinburgh, UK, and Consultant at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh.
Professor Greer graduated from the University of Glasgow and trained in both internal medicine and obstetrics and gynaecology. He has been awarded the MRCOG Gold Medal, the William Blair Bell Memorial Lectureship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Bernhard Baron Travelling Scholarship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and the Watson Prize Lectureship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
He is chair of the UK’s National Advisory Committee for Enquiries into Maternal Health, which has taken over responsibility for the Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths, and has a remit to advance enquiries into maternal morbidity. He serves on several research committees including the Medical Research Council’s Physiological Systems and Clinical Sciences Board (deputy chair) and its Strategic Portfolio Overview Group; the Clinical Trials Cross-Board Group, and the Biomarkers Awards Panel. Professor Greer was chair of the Scottish Perinatal Mortality and Morbidity Review Advisory Group (1999–2006) and is co-chair of the Scientific and Standardisation Subcommittee on Women’s Health of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. He has also served on several committees of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, including chairing their Subspecialty Committee. He has been a member of the American College of Chest Physicians 6th, 7th, and 8th Consensus Conferences on Antithrombotic Therapy, and he is a medical advisor to several patient groups and medical charities, such as Action on Pre-eclampsia.
Professor Greer’s research focuses on high-risk pregnancy, medical disorders in pregnancy, and women’s vascular health, particularly in relation to haemostasis and thrombosis and hypertension, but he has also worked on the control of parturition. He has authored, co-authored, or edited 11 textbooks or specialist books for health professionals, and 2 for a wider public audience. He has contributed to 18 national or international guidelines and has published over 330 peer-reviewed original papers, review articles, and book chapters largely relating medical disorders in pregnancy and, in particular, haemostasis and thrombosis.
