Hans-Joachim Schmoll
Professor Schmoll is Head of the Department of Haematology and Oncology at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Halle, Germany. In the same department, he held positions as Fellow, as Assistant Professor, as Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Haematology, and as Director of the Division of Oncology, before taking up his current role.
Professor Schmoll is, or has been, a prominent contributor to several oncology societies. In the European Society for Medical Oncology, he is on the board of directors and the executive committee and is chair of the Multidisciplinary Oncologic Committee. Until recently he was a member of the Programme Committee and of the Membership Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is, amongst other roles, Chair of the Association of Medical Oncology of Germany within the German Cancer Society and is involved in study groups of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer. He is the founder and current President of the Saxony-Anhalt Cancer Society. In addition, he is the Chair of the Cancer Centre of the University Hospital of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
Professor Schmoll received the Johann-Georg-Zimmerman Award for Cancer Research in 1981 and the German Cancer Award in 2001. Since 2006 he has been an honorary member of the Hungarian Cancer Society.
Among Professor Schmoll’s editorial roles are Editor in Chief of Onkologie, Associate Editor of Cancer Research, and Member of the Editorial Board for the European Journal of Cancer, Annals of Oncology, Critical Reviews in Hematology, Cancer and Chemotherapy Reviews, and ADIS-Oncology.
