Dr Cohen is a vascular physician and epidemiologist involved in designing, managing, and analysing clinical trials from phase I to IV, and in international steering committees for multicentre trials. His main interests continue to be in the screening for and the prevention of vascular disease. He specializes in the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, prevention of stroke and coronary artery disease, and prophylaxis and treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE).  He has participated in cardiovascular clinical trials for low-molecular-weight heparins, factor X inhibitors such as pentasaccharides and oral agents, parenteral and oral thrombin inhibitors, and thrombolytic, antiplatelet, and lipid-lowering drugs.

Dr Cohen graduated with honours in medicine and surgery from the University of Melbourne, Australia (MBBS). He achieved his fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1990, and was awarded an MSc in Epidemiology in 1991 from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London. In 1998, he achieved an MD with a thesis on epidemiology of VTE and thromboprophylaxis. He was previously Director of Clinical Research and Epidemiologist in Thrombosis Research at King’s College Hospital, London.

Dr Cohen is a member of the International Union of Angiology, the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, the British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis, the Cochrane Review Group for Systematic Reviews, the Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand, and the Formulary Committee at Guy’s, King's College, Lewisham and St Thomas’ Hospitals, UK. He has written or co-authored over 200 papers and abstracts since 1990, many in The Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine and BMJ. He is a regular editor for the peer-reviewed journals Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and The Lancet, and a reviewer for the National Health Service (NHS) Centre for Reviews and Dissemination and the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin. He is an advisor, as a vascular physician and epidemiologist, to the UK Government Health Select Committee, the all-party working group on thrombosis, the Department of Health, and the National Health Service, on the prevention of venous thromboembolism. He is also an advisor to Lifeblood: The Thrombosis Charity, and is the founder of the European educational charity the Coalition to Prevent Venous ThromboEmbolism.
