Adam Torbicki

Dr Torbicki is Professor of Medicine and Head of the Department of Chest Medicine at the Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, Warsaw, Poland, a reference centre for pulmonary hypertension and embolism. He received his medical degree from Warsaw University School of Medicine in 1978. A specialist in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Dr Torbicki has held fellowships at the University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany and University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy.

Since 1982, Dr Torbicki has been involved in research related to pulmonary circulation, with a special interest in non-invasive evaluation of pulmonary haemodynamics and right ventricular function. He has contributed to many recent trials assessing pharmacologic treatments in pulmonary hypertension and is the coordinator of the task force preparing an update of the first European Guidelines on Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism, which was originally published in 2000.

Dr Torbicki was Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Pulmonary Circulation European Forum in Warsaw in 2006, Chairman of the Working Group on Pulmonary Circulation and Right Ventricular Function of the European Society of Cardiology from 2004 to 2006, and has been President of the Polish Cardiac Society since 2004.
